Set up a computer.
FarLink connects to the screen sharing on your computer. Here is how to turn it on, and how to reach the computer from anywhere.
Set up a Mac
Uses the Screen Sharing built into macOS. Nothing else to install for your local network.
On your network
- Open System Settings › General › Sharing.
- Turn on Screen Sharing.
- Under the info button, allow your user (or All users).
- Connect with your macOS account name and password.
From anywhere, with auto resolution
For auto resolution and access from anywhere, install FarLink on the Mac and turn on Allow this Mac to be controlled.
A Mac signed in to FarLink with your account appears in Your devices by itself, with no code needed. For a Mac on another account, type the 8-character code it shows.
Set up a Windows PC
Works with the VNC server you prefer: TightVNC, RealVNC Server or UltraVNC.
On your network
- Install TightVNC, RealVNC Server or UltraVNC.
- Set a VNC password in the server settings.
- Allow port
5900through Windows Firewall. - Connect using the PC’s IP address.
From anywhere, with auto resolution
For auto resolution and access from anywhere, install FarLink Helper on the PC.

On your network
- X11: run
x11vnc -usepw -forever. - Or install TigerVNC:
vncserver :1listens on port 5901. - Wayland (Sway and others): run
wayvnc 0.0.0.0. - Open the port in your firewall, for example
ufw allow 5900.
From anywhere, with auto resolution
For auto resolution and access from anywhere, install FarLink Helper on the computer.
Open FarLink Helper on the computer and choose Add to FarLink, then type the 8-character code it shows.
Troubleshooting
- The computer does not appear in Nearby
- Nearby lists computers that advertise screen sharing on your local network. Check both devices are on the same network, and that the VNC server is running. You can always add a computer by its IP address or name instead.
- FarLink cannot connect
- Check the address and port. Most VNC servers listen on port 5900; TigerVNC display :1 listens on 5901. Make sure the port is allowed through the computer’s firewall.
- The picture is slow on a big screen
- Switch the computer’s quality to Fast. It sends 16-bit colour, which is much quicker on large Mac displays. Each computer remembers its own setting.
- The resolution does not change
- Auto resolution needs the FarLink host app on the computer: FarLink for Mac with Allow this Mac to be controlled turned on, or FarLink Helper on Windows and Linux. Pair your device with the 6-digit code the computer shows.
Account and billing
- Signing in
- FarLink accounts use Sign in with Apple on every platform. On Windows and Linux, sign-in opens Apple’s page in your browser and returns to the app with a single-use code.
- Subscribing and cancelling
- Subscribe in FarLink on iPhone, iPad or Mac. Cancel in your Apple Account settings (on iPhone or iPad: Settings › your name › Subscriptions). Deleting the app or your account does not cancel a subscription.
- Refunds
- Apple handles refunds of App Store purchases. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.
- Your data
- Download a copy of your account data, or delete your account, in Settings › FarLink Cloud › Account.
